Creative Ideas & Tips in Making your House feel like Home
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
CRAZY PAVING. Love the look of slate but your wallet doesn't? After something a bit kooky? Then you need crazy paving:
- Crazy paving is just broken and oddly shaped bits of slate, randomly laid. It's usually sold in crates, made up of broken pieces of regular slabs of slate.
- The best bit about crazy paving? It's a steal. Costs vary depending on where on where it's quarried from, but it's cheaper than regular slate.
- Pieces come in different thicknesses, so you'll need to grade the pieces into similar thicknesses, then lay over mortar, starting with the thickest then working to the thinnest.
- There are no rules! Match shapes like a jigsaw or - plonk 'em where they land.
- Like regular slate, crazy slate needs to be sealed with an acrylic sealer. Depending on how much wear it gets you'll need to reseal every year or so.
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
BI-FOLD DOORS. Gasping for air? Don't leave the house - just get bi-fold doors to bring in the summer breeze. Here's How:
- Bi-fold doors are your quickest way route to true indoor/outdoor living. Unlike regular swing or sliding doors, they fold right back (much like an accordian), to open your house to the outside.
- The best spot for Bi-folds is a living area opening onto a leafy courtyard or backyard, making one big entertaining space. Ensure the doors are semi-protected, or you could end up with water leaks.
- Insist on A-grade safety glass and have it insulated (up to 20mm thick) to deflect the winter cold. Also a heavy-duty wheel system makes doors easier to slide.
- You can have any number of glass panels: two, three, six, whatever. Go for a timber frame for a tropical look, or steel for the slick industrial feel.
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT...
PLANTATION SHUTTERS. Bring a bit of southern charm to your place with plantation shutters. Here's how:
- All plantation shutters are custom-made to fit and offer top sun protection for you and your furniture. Louvres can be tilted to let in light and air, while maintaining privacy.
- Shutters make great room dividers, for instance in between the dining and living area. Go for sliding track or bi-folds.
- Tailor your look: Flat louvres come up to five different widths and some suppliers carry curved blades. The tilt bar can be placed at the center or either side of the panels.
- Poor quality timbers can warp. Go for top-grade wood like western red cedar, which has natural oils that keep it looking better for longer.
- Timber not your style? Go for plastic ones.
